Last night, my local cinema showed the original Ghostbusters [1984] movie – yes Ghostbusters from 1984 starring Bill Murray and Slimer. Despite owning the DVD, it’s been a while since I’d seen this one.
I’m not going to review the film itself – for those who’ve not seen it, it’s a fun, lively comedy with a supernatural twist – it was not an uneventful showing, complete with breaks in the film, bad splicing, a lot of dirt, soundtrack jumps and several other problems – however it’s still a fun movie, and the 100ft tall Marshmallow Man is much more imposing on the big screen than on the telly at home.
Of course, being a 20 year old movie, the special effects aren’t anywhere near the slick CGI standard we’ve become used to in recent years – but despite the Marshmallow Man clearly being a guy in a “fat suit” stomping around a scale model of Manahatten, you kinda ignore that.
The showing was pretty full, and was lively too – with people in the audience singing along to the title music. This is all part of the fun of these time-warp showings – everyone has more than likely seen the film before, (although from the age range represented, most would have seen it only on TV or DVD) – the glitches don’t really spoil things (as they would with a “new” film).
Some Favourite lines:
“I’m too terrified to think rationally” (Egon, said completely deadpan while the temple of Zuul explodes around him and the Marshmallow Man is scaling the building in a homage to King Kong!)
“He Slimed Me” (Peter Venkman)
“Oh, they’ll be totally discrete”
