It’s that time of year again – my least favourite "celebration" of the
year. The time when kids dress up as ghosts and ghouls and harass
innocent householders for sweets, with threats of vandalism and
harasment if you don’t comply.

Some people object to the celebrations on the belief that these
activities are inherently evil, and I’m sure there are occult and evil
things going on, but that’s not the subject of this discussion… I’m
here to talk about "trick-or-treat" – a "tradition" that has gone from
being a bit of fun for little kids, getting a little treat of sweets
from their neighbours, to an intimidating and threatening experience
for householders and families.

I’ve no objection to "little-kids" (i.e. 8 and unders) dressing up as
Spiderman or throwing an old sheet over themselves with a couple of
eye-holes and "trick or treating", under close supervision from their parents,
who are close by and keeping an eye on whats happening – it’s the gangs
of teenagers in factory produced "scream" masks (and similar things
which are designed to be un-nerving and intimidating, including "fake"
chainsaws and axes) carrying ample supplies of rotten eggs who are
actually going to mess up the front of your house whether or not you
give them something, that I object to.

Halloween parties, again can be fun for adults – just an excuse to have
a good time – it’s the bit inbetween, the unsupervised children and
teenagers making a nuscience of themselves that I so object to.

This must be a terrifying time for the elderly, trapped in their homes
whilst these children intimidate and threaten them. I don’t enjoy the
evening if I’m at home, just waiting for the doorbell to ring and that
threat "trick or treat" to be heard…

I know that come Monday, I’ll probably be cleaning up my front garden…
